A very entertaining and informative District A-4 convention was held on April 11 through 13 at the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata.  Lions Peggy Feltmate, Liz Christie, Pearl Brule, Avis Templeton, Todd Sloan and Tom Feltmate represented the Kanata-Hazeldean Lions Club at the Convention.

The Opening Ceremonies featured a speech by Lion Penny LeClair, a blind Lion from the Gloucester Lions Club, who re-enacted the speech given by Helen Keller at the 1925 International Convention of Lions Clubs.  Lion Penny clearly demonstrated why we as Lions so clearly focus on eradicating preventable blindness and providing services to the visually impaired.  Following the opening ceremonies, there were a number of excellent information sessions on Orientation, Conflict Resolution, Tail Twisting, Becoming a Zone Chair, and Lions On-Line (presented by Lion Liz Christie).

The Saturday Luncheon featured inspiring presentations by Leos from our District highlighting their accomplishments as Leos, describing the benefits they realized from their membership in their Leo Club,  and encouraging Clubs in the District to consider promoting the Leo program in their area.  Region meetings followed the Luncheon during which we were able exchange information regarding activities undertaken by the various Clubs in our Region.

The Sunday agenda featured the Memorial Service for deceased Lions, Lioness and Lionettes.  This was followed by the District A-4 Cabinet Meeting at which time the results of Convention voting was announced.  There will be a $2 per Lion increase in District A-4 dues to assist our District to maintain a balanced budget.  It should be noted that this increase in dues was accompanied by a reduction in budgeted expenditures of approximately 25% – from $24K down to $18K.

The New Cabinet for next year was announced with Lion Rick McCauley elected as District Governor, Lions Kris Schulz as 1^st Vice District Governor and Lion Sue Wilkes as 2^nd Vice District Governor. Lion Tom Feltmate will be Cabinet Secretary and Lion James Doyle will be Cabinet Treasurer.  For our Club, Lion Beth Lewis will be our Zone Chair and Lion Paul Riddell, also from Stittsville, will be our Region Chair.

Lion Peter Henry is proud to announce that the Ottawa Recreational Blind Curlers Team, on which he is the lead, won second place in the Ontario Blind Curling Association Provincial Championship held in Toronto on April 4 to 6, 2014.  Lion Peter curls with 3 other visually impaired curlers plus a coach and a sighted sweeper.  Lion Michael Hayes of the Ottawa – Vanier Lions Club is skip for the team.  Other members include Sheldon MacDonald (second), Michael Hunsley (third), Gord Wilson (sweeper) and Steve Fisher (coach).  Lion Peter is seen with his Canine Vision Canada Dog Guide “Kane”.

A big thank you to Bill Lumley of Bill’s Cabinets (http://billscabinets.com/) here in Kanata. During the recent “spring” cleaning of the Kitchen, it was noted that there was a large (1/2 inch) gap between the kitchen cabinets and the ceiling. A photo was taken and sent to Bill Lumley for his comment and he strongly recommended repairs to stabilize the cabinets. Bill had supplied the cabinets five years ago when we renovated the kitchen, however he did not install them.

On March 20th, Lions Bill Switzer and Tom Feltmate met Bill at the Lions’ Hall – it turns out that both Bill’s were employees of Nortel at the same time – I thought the work would never get started as Lion Bill and Bill had to reminisce about old times and old friends at Nortel. However….once Bill pulled out his special cabinet jack, it was not long before the cabinets were once more flush with the ceiling, all connections tightened and screws added at the bulkhead to make sure things will stay in place.

At the end of a couple of hours work, Bill announced that, as we are a community service organization, he was not going to charge us for the call or the work done.

Yes…Lion Bill did give Bill a brochure encouraging him to consider joining one of the finest service organizations in the world!!
