40th Anniversary Charter Night

Mark your calendar now for the Kanata-Hazeldean Lions Club’s 40th Charter Night – a gala event in celebration of our Club’s immeasurable contribution to our community. We are honoured to be hosting this event on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the Lion Dick Brûlé Community Centre, 170 Castlefrank Road, Kanata.

The evening will commence with cocktails at 6:00 pm with dinner being served at 7:00 p.m. The cost will be $35 per person, and will include a prime rib dinner. We will be celebrating the contribution of community minded individuals who give freely of their time and efforts to make our community that much better to live in.

The Kanata-Hazeldean Lions Club is such an organization. With 30 active members, the Club donates, on average, $30,000 per year back to the community of Kanata. The Club undertakes special projects periodically which have resulted in the presentation of a number of service vehicles to various organizations in our community. We were instrumental in building a 1200 square foot addition to the Lion Dick Brûlé Community Centre so that the Kanata Youth Centre would have a permanent home in our community. Over the past five years we have purchased special equipment for the Ottawa Eye Institute ($25K), donated $15K to the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice in Kanata, and we are currently in the fourth year of a $25K donation to the Acute Care for the Elderly Unit at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital.

Our work expands outside of our own community – the Lions Clubs of Canada maintain their own Dog Guide School in Oakville for clients who are blind, deaf, autistic, diabetic or suffer from seizures or other physical challenges . The Kanata-Hazeldean Lions Club helps raise funds for this school through annual Dog Walks. Last year’s Ottawa Lions Walk raised over $17,000. Similarly we have contributed to the building of two homes for deaf people in the Ottawa area.

We are proud to announce that Brian Goudge will be our guest speaker for the evening. Brian enjoyed a 33 year career in public education and following retirement has been a consultant in a number of fields, most recently travel consulting with Expedia CruiseShipCenters. Brian was a charter member of the Kinsman Club of Kanata and has served as president of the Ottawa-Carleton Learning Foundation. For the past 45 years, Brian (aka “Motormouth”) was the voice of the Capital City Speedway and provided commentary to special events throughout the area.

This is your opportunity to meet and mingle with past and present members of the Club and to say “good work” to those who have served Kanata over the past 40 years. We are proud of our past and hopeful of our future and we sincerely hope that you will be able to help us celebrate this significant achievement.
